The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection recommends that all homes be tested for radon.  &nbsp;Homeowners can test for radon themselves or hire a New Jersey certified individual to perform the testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/radon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>.  Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. The more radon you are exposed to, and the longer the exposure, the greater the risk of eventually developing lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year in the United States. About 2,900 of these deaths occur among people who have never smoked.  On January 13, 2005, Dr. Richard H. Carmona, the U.S. Surgeon General, issued a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adph.org\/radon\/assets\/surgeon_general_radon.pdf\">national health advisory on radon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;<em>My neighbors were selling their home.
